Education Pre-Review

The Education Pre-Review determines if graduate-level education is equivalent to the registration standards for a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) credential. This is not an application for a credential.

***IMPORTANT: Applying for the education pre-review and meeting the education requirements does not mean an applicant has been granted the ATR or ATR-Provisional; the application process for the ATR or ATR-Provisional is distinct and separate.***

The education pre-review option is available for applicants who must determine if their education meets the ATR education requirements before applying for the ATR-Provisional or the ATR credential. Before submitting a pre-review application, interested candidates should review the Registration Standards. as applicants will be required to demonstrate their familiarity with the ATR education requirements throughout this process.

For the education pre-review, applicants must indicate what they request to be reviewed (for example, a master’s degree in social work and post-masters certificate in art therapy along with undergraduate courses in studio art) and upload all relevant materials for this review. This could include official graduate and undergraduate transcripts, course syllabi or course descriptions, the Verification of Coursework Form, and the Verification of Practicum and Internship Form. However, the application reviewer may require additional information because each review is unique.

Once all supporting application documents are received, the application will move to “In Review”; review times can take eight to twelve weeks. Pre-review applicants will be notified when the review is finished. Please check MyATCB portals for notices on additional information requested to complete the review.

International Applicants

International applicants have an additional step as they must submit the evaluation results from Education Credential Evaluators (www.ece.org) or World Education Services (wes.org) along with copies of their education program and course descriptions translated by University Language Services (universitylanguage.com).

If the practicum/internship completed as part of an applicant’s education program was supervised by an individual credentialed as an art therapist in an applicant’s country, ATCB will accept this supervision in place of supervision by an ATR, ATR-BC or ATCS.

Completion of Education Pre-Review

If it is determined that an applicant meets the education requirements, they may then apply for the ATR-Provisional or ATR credential, they will not be required to re-submit the documents submitted for the education pre-review.

The education pre-review fee is $50 and is nonrefundable and nontransferable.
