Taking the ATCB Exam for State Licensure
In certain jurisdictions, a passing score on the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCB Exam)
is required for professional licensure. Candidates pursuing licensure must meet the requirements of
their state licensing board and complete the ATCB Exam application process through the MyATCB portal.
States Using the ATCB Exam for Licensure
The following jurisdictions currently utilize the ATCB Exam as part of their licensure process:
- Kentucky
- Maryland
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- Washington, D.C.
State Authorization Required:
Candidates must obtain an eligibility or approval letter/email from their state licensure board confirming they are authorized to sit for the ATCB Exam. This documentation must be submitted through the MyATCB application process.
Candidates are responsible for confirming all licensure requirements directly with their state licensing board.
Creating a MyATCB Account
To apply for the ATCB Exam, candidates must create a MyATCB account. If you do not already have an account, please create one before beginning your application.

Applying for the ATCB Exam
State licensure candidates must complete the ATCB Exam for State Licensure application within the MyATCB portal and submit all required documentation, including state authorization.
Applications are accepted year-round. Once all required documentation is received and eligibility is confirmed, candidates will receive approval to sit for the examination.
Approval notifications are sent to the email address listed in the candidate’s MyATCB portal. Candidates must receive approval before scheduling their exam.
Examination Fee
The ATCB Exam fee for state licensure candidates is $325. The examination fee is non-transferable and non-refundable.
Scheduling and Testing Window
Once approved, candidates have a 1-year testing window to complete the examination. State licensing board requirements may vary.
After approval, candidates must schedule their exam directly with Prometric, the official ATCB testing provider. Scheduling instructions will be provided in the approval notification.
The ATCB Exam is offered via computer-based testing (CBT) and is available year-round:
- Prometric Testing Center – In-person examination at an approved facility
- Remotely Proctored Exam – Taken from an internet-enabled location that meets remote proctoring requirements

Receiving Results
An unofficial score report is available within hours of completing the examination.
Official results are processed within 12 business days and made available through the MyATCB portal.
Official score reports are transmitted to the appropriate state licensing board in accordance with ATCB policy.
Special Accommodations
Candidates requiring special accommodations must first submit their request to their state licensure board.
Upon state approval, the authorization letter must be uploaded through the MyATCB application process. Some accommodations may require testing at a Prometric Testing Center.
Retaking the ATCB Exam
Candidates must wait 90 days between examination attempts. Additional retake requirements may be established by the state licensing board.
To retake the exam, candidates must reapply through the MyATCB portal and submit the examination fee. The assigned testing window will reflect the required 90-day waiting period.
