ATR Bridge Plan

A structured pathway for the ATR-P that qualified mental health professionals to meet ATR education eligibility requirements.

  1. ATR Bridge Plan

What the ATR Bridge Plan Is

The ATR Bridge Plan is an educational pathway for clinical mental health professionals who already hold a master’s degree and seek to meet the art therapy coursework requirements for the Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) credential as they work on the supervision requirements to acquire the Registered Art Therapist (ATR).

This pathway recognizes that career paths evolve. Many experienced clinicians discover the clinical value of art therapy and wish to incorporate it into their professional practice. The ATR Bridge Plan provides a structured method for completing the required art therapy competencies while maintaining ATCB’s established standards for education, supervision, and ethical practice.

Completion of the ATR Bridge Plan allows an applicant to meet the educational requirements for ATR eligibility and thus granted the ATR-P credential. The ATR credential is granted only after all standard eligibility criteria have been satisfied.

Why the Bridge Plan Exists

ATCB’s mission is to protect the public by establishing and upholding standards for competent and ethical art therapy practice. As interest in art therapy continues to grow, it is essential that professionals who incorporate art-based interventions into their clinical work do so with appropriate training.

The ATR Bridge Plan ensures that graduate level educated mental health professionals who seek to practice art therapy complete the necessary art therapy-specific education rather than relying on informal or abbreviated training. By providing a clearly defined route to meeting ATR education standards, ATCB supports responsible career transitions while preserving the integrity of the credential.

This pathway expands access to properly trained art therapists without expanding eligibility beyond established competency requirements.

How the Bridge Plan Works

ATCB conducts a review of each applicant’s academic preparation and professional background. Based on that review, ATCB provides a structured plan identifying required art therapy coursework and additional supervision needed to meet established eligibility standards.

Coursework requirements vary depending on prior education and may include specific content areas in art therapy theory, clinical practice, ethics, and supervised application of art-based interventions.

After completing the required coursework and any additional ATR-P eligibility requirements, applicants may proceed through the standard ATR application process.

Program Details & Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the ATR Bridge Plan, applicants must:

  • Hold a master’s degree in clinical mental health or a closely related field
  • Submit transcripts and documentation for review

Applicants who qualify for the ATR Bridge Plan will receive an individualized coursework plan outlining the specific art therapy education requirements needed to meet ATR education standards and earn the Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) credential.

What the Bridge Plan Does Not Do

The ATR Bridge Plan does not waive educational requirements or reduce eligibility standards. It does not grant the ATR-P or the ATR credential automatically, and it does not replace required supervised experience.

The ATR Bridge Plan ensures that professionals entering art therapy practice meet the same standards for preparation and accountability as all Registered Art Therapists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility & Overview

What is the ATR Bridge Plan?

The ATR Bridge Plan is an educational pathway for individuals who already hold a master’s degree in a mental health concentration (i.e. Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology) and need to complete specific art therapy coursework to meet education eligibility requirements for the ATR credential by qualifying for the Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) credential. If awarded the ATR-P, the bridge plan will include supplemental direct client contact hours and supervision in excess of the ATR’s 1000/100requirements.

The ATR Bridge Plan provides a structured route to meeting established ATR education standards while maintaining ATCB’s expectations for education, supervision, and ethical practice.

Who is eligible for the ATR Bridge Plan?

To be considered for the ATR Bridge Plan, applicants must:

  • Hold a master’s degree in clinical mental health or a closely related field

The ATR credential is granted only after all ATR requirements identified in the plan — including supervised clinical experience and supervision— have been satisfied.

Education & Coursework

What coursework is required through the ATR Bridge Plan?

Coursework requirements vary by applicant. After reviewing transcripts and qualifications, ATCB provides an individualized plan identifying specific art therapy content areas that must be completed to meet ATR education standards.

Required coursework may include art therapy theory, clinical practice, ethics, assessment, and supervised application of art-based interventions.

What need in the field does the ATR Bridge Plan address?

As interest in art therapy continues to grow, licensed mental health professionals may seek to incorporate art-based approaches into their practice. Without structured educational pathways, preparation may be inconsistent. The ATR Bridge Plan ensures that those entering art therapy practice complete appropriate art therapy-specific education aligned with ATR standards.

Impact & Purpose
