Important Changes to Registered Art Therapist (ATR) Applications

Effective July 1, 2024, at 12:00 AM EST, the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) will discontinue the current Registered Art Therapist (ATR) application process.

As of July 1, 2024, at 12:00 AM EST, individuals must first obtain Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) status to become an ATR. This change applies only to new Registered Art Therapist (ATR) applicants and does not impact current ATR credential holders.

The ATCB will allow a grandfathering period for all Registered Art Therapist (ATR) applications submitted before July 1, 2024, at 12:00 AM EST:

  • If an applicant is collecting supervision hours and does not hold an Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) credential, they must submit an ATR application before July 1, 2024, at 12:00 AM EST for those hours to be accepted.
  • Alternatively, individuals may apply for Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) status instead.
  • The ATCB will accept supervision hours from the date of application submission.

Application Requirements

A completed application must meet the Registration Standards and include:

  • Official Academic Transcript
  • Verification of Post-Education Experience
  • Three Professional References

Any Registered Art Therapist (ATR) application not completed by June 30, 2025, at 11:59 PM EST, will automatically convert to an Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) application.

Annual Credential Assessment

The ATCB reviews credential and certification programs annually. Any further changes resulting from this assessment will be communicated promptly.

Reinstating ATR-P, ATR and ATCS Credentials

NOTICE:

Effective July 1, 2024, at 12:00 AM EST, all inactive credentials will have one year (July 1 – June 30) to complete the reinstatement process and restore the credential to active status.

Reinstatement Fee: The reinstatement fee is $250, effective July 1, 2024.

Permanent Inactivation: To comply with data privacy and protection regulations, the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) will not hold personally identifiable information in MyATCB portals for inactive credentials for longer than one year. If a credential is not reinstated within one year of becoming inactive, it (and its assigned credential number) will be permanently inactive.

Reinstatements Available for Registered Art Therapist (ATR), Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P), and Art Therapy Credentialed Supervisor (ATCS) Credentials Only

Board Certification Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC) is not a credential—it is a certification.

For missed recertification of board certification, please refer to the information outlined in the ATR-BC Recertification FAQ.

Credential Reinstatement Information

The ATCB credential year runs from July 1 to June 30. Before each new credential year, credential holders must complete an ethics and credential holder attestation as part of the renewal process. An email alert is sent when renewals open, and all renewals must be completed through MYATCB to ensure compliance with the Code governing Standards of Practice, Eligibility for and Regulation of Credentials, and Disciplinary Procedures

Grace Period: If the renewal is not completed by the due date, there is a 30-day grace period from July 1 – July 31 to complete it. A $30 late fee will apply. Any credential without an updated ethics attestation by July 31 at 11:59 PM EST will become inactive.

Reinstatement Process

If a credential becomes inactive, a reinstatement application must be completed.

To Return to Active Status:

  1. Complete the reinstatement application via MYATCB.
  2. Pay the $250 reinstatement fee.
  3. Submit a letter from a current ATCB credential holder endorsing the applicant’s return to active status. The letter must attest that the applicant has reviewed and agrees to abide by the Code governing Standards of Practice, Eligibility for and Regulation of Credentials, and Disciplinary Procedures. This letter should be uploaded with the reinstatement application.

Reinstatement applications undergo the same ethics review process as all ATCB applications. The reinstatement fee covers the ethics review, national registry relisting, administrative costs, and the annual renewal fee.

Fee Waiver Requests: Credential holders facing financial hardship may request a fee waiver. Contact LeeAnn Mandrillo for assistance. All fee waivers require board approval.

Board Certification & Reinstatement

If an Board Certified Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC) credential holder’s Registered Art Therapist (ATR) was not renewed and became inactive during the board certification cycle, the Board Certification (BC) distinction can resume once the ATR is reinstated.

However, if both the ATR renewal and Board Certification (BC) recertification were missed, the reinstatement process only applies to the ATR. Additional information about board certification recertification is available here.

Appealing Credential Inactivation

Credential holders may appeal the inactivation of a credential by submitting a formal request to the ATCB Board of Appeals. However, appeals will not be considered for challenges to established deadlines and processes outlined in the credential requirements and ATCB communications, unless there is cause.

All appeal requests must be submitted following the appeal guidelines and requirements can be found here. Please review them before submitting an appeal.
